A man is facing animal cruelty charges after he admitted to killing and burying his dog on a relative’s Centre County property, according to state police at Rockview.

Marvin S. Williams Jr., 38, of Blair County, told troopers that he shot his elderly American bulldog in the ear after it bit his thumb while he was getting it out of its cage on Saturday night, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

Williams said that after the dog bit him, he drove it to a relative’s property in Taylor Township, where he shot it in a garage, police wrote. He initially told troopers he used a lever-action .30-30 rifle, but later said he used a .22-caliber pellet gun, according to the affidavit.

He also showed troopers where he dug a hole and buried the dog in a wooded area, police wrote. After moving rocks that were used to cover it, troopers observed the deceased dog with a wound to its left ear.

Williams is charged with a felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals and a misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals.

He was arraigned on Monday by District Judge Steven Lachman and released on $50,000 unsecured bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 4.
